These three modules take a step wise approach to the topic. First introducing HCI, then discussing human performance, and finally joining the two in the module "Putting it all together".

The first module covers what HCI is, and defines usability. Usability used to be called 'user friendliness' - and it is basically about the same thing - making sure computers and other information technology is easy, efficient and satisfactory to use. We also look at how to achieve and measure usability. These, and other useful concepts are illustrated with maritime examples.

The second module looks at usability in the context of human performance. We examine human capabilities and to some extent, our limitations. This needs to be introduced in order to 'fit the job/tool to the person' instead of 'fitting the person to the job'. We discuss perception, cognition and mental models, and how HCI is about computers but also users.

In the third module we put all the bits together, humans, computers, work, context and situation. We discuss good design, and how designers need feedback and information from users to achieve usability.

Finally - remember- that to find out what is needed in a design project, whether it is an existing workplace or new build, we need to go there. We should find out what people need, not what they want. We should study the work and the workplace and involve users. More about this in the module on User involvement and evaluation!
